When you bill through Skimmer, you can set up an automatic surcharge for credit card payments. On the website, go to Settings and then Payments. Once there, you’ll see a button that says Activate Credit Card Surcharging.

- 2
- Click the button and you’ll get a pop-up. Since card networks have specific rules that apply to surcharging, you’re agreeing to additional terms of service. One rule is that debit card and ACH payments cannot have a surcharge applied, only credit cards. Another requirement is a 30-day waiting period before surcharges can start to be applied. So, once you click to activate, that waiting period will begin.

The original activation button has now changed to a toggle, which you can switch on or off. Second, the Pricing box has updated to show an additional credit card fee for processing a payment that has a surcharge applied.

That’s all you need to do to set up surcharging. The system will add the surcharge for credit cards, whether its auto-paid or submitted manually. So, when you create and send an invoice, the customer will see a disclaimer letting them know a surcharge will be applied if they pay with a credit card. They also have the option of adding a new payment method. Once they submit payment, their invoice will update to reflect the surcharge. You’ll also be able to see it in Skimmer when you view the invoice.
