Skimmer Device and Browser Requirements

Skimmer has two parts: the web app, which your office uses in a browser, and the Skimmer Pro mobile app used in the field. Each one has its own requirements. Use this guide to check that your computers, phones, and tablets are ready for Skimmer.

Skimmer web app

Use the web app on a computer or large tablet to manage customers, routes, invoices, and company settings. Sign in at getskimmer.com.

Supported browsers

The web app works in the current version of these browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Apple Safari
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Mozilla Firefox

Keep automatic updates turned on in your browser. These browsers check for updates and install them on their own, so you always have the latest version.

Screen size

The web app works best on screens that are 1366 × 768 pixels or larger. This covers most laptops and desktop monitors, as well as large tablets such as the iPad Pro.

Note: We don't recommend the web app on phones or small tablets. On smaller screens, page headers can cover content and make pages hard to use. In the field, your techs use the mobile app instead.

Skimmer Pro mobile app

Your techs use the Skimmer Pro mobile app to run routes, complete stops, record readings, and take photos. Download it from the App Store or Google Play. The mobile app runs on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.

For the best experience, use a phone that meets these recommendations:

  • iPhone: iPhone 12 or newer, running iOS 17 or later.
  • Android: A phone comparable to a 2023 or newer Samsung Galaxy S series or Galaxy A3x series (or higher), running Android 13 or later.

Operating system updates

Skimmer's recommendations follow new releases from Apple and Google. When a new major version of iOS or Android comes out, the oldest recommended version moves up. A major version is the first number in the version. For example, in iOS 26.1, the major version is 26.

To check for updates on an iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. On an Android phone, check for updates in the Settings app.

App updates

Skimmer supports the current version of the mobile app plus the three previous minor releases. Older versions may keep working, but they don't get new features or bug fixes. Versions more than eight releases behind the current version, or older than 12 months, may need an update before you can sign in.

To keep the app current, turn on automatic app updates on each device, or update Skimmer Pro from the App Store or Google Play. If a tech can't sign in, check that their app is up to date first.

Connection and storage

The mobile app works without a cell signal. Techs can open their route, complete stops, record readings, and take photos with no connection. When the phone connects again, the app syncs their work on its own.

Keep these points in mind:

  • Signing in needs an internet connection. Have new techs sign in for the first time where they have a signal.
  • Logging out or uninstalling the app permanently erases any work that hasn't synced. Sync before you log out.
  • Keep at least 200 MB of free storage on each phone. When free storage drops below 200 MB, the app shows a warning, and photos may fail to save.

Customer portal

Your customers use the customer portal to sign up and view their account. The portal adjusts to fit the screen, so customers can use it on a phone, tablet, or computer. It works in the current version of the same browsers as the web app, on screens as small as 375 × 667 pixels (the size of an iPhone SE). For information on activating the portal for your customers, see the Customer Portal - Set up and Activate Help article.
